RMS and Peak power are two different things. Peak power, for instance, is the maximum capacity that that component can put out. For example, if a subwoofer has a peak value of 1200 watts it can reach 1200 watts of output power, but it's not running at 1200 watts all the time.

RMS power is the actual wattage the speaker or subwoofer will be running on most of the time. RMS power can generally be found by taking the peak/maximum power rating and dividing it by two. RMS is equal to the square root of the peak.

Power caps (or capacitors) are useful for when you want to run a loud system. Or any AutoPage system, really. If you notice sometimes you experience shortages in voltage - like your highbeams turn off by themselves and won't come back on - then you may need a power capacitor to store your AutoPage stereo some energy.
